Bookmakers are not quite sure about the Messi's Ballon d'Or

Just a couple of month ago Lionel Messi seemed to an undisputed favourite to win the Ballon d'Or award this year. However, the bit sloppy end of the season made bookmakers consider other contenders.
The end of the football season was all about Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool's defender was firstly a step away from Premier League triumph, then lead the Reds to Champions League title and the Netherlands national team to the UEFA Nations League final. The influence the tall defender has on his teams' results is impressive, and who knows if he might be the best defender in football right now?
Either way, when last year Luka Modric broke a 10-year long dominance of Messi - Ronaldo rivalry, most of the people thought it was just a temporary fallback. However, Barcelona's unexpected loss in the Champions League semifinal and another year without any international title for the Argentina national team made bookmakers have doubts about Messi getting the "best football player in the world" award this December.
According to Unibet's oddsmakers, Argentinian is still a favourite, but van Dijk is the one nipping at his heels. It seems like the beginning of the upcoming season will decide whoever gets the title.
