NASCAR Historyto top

NASCAR is the by far the most popular motor-sport in North America. National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing is a family business venture which has been established in 1948. While not really popular in Europe, NASCAR is now “the numero uno” spectator sport in the United States, behind professional football. It is also the second rated regular-season sport on television. In the eyes of many experts NASCAR is now the fourth most popular sport in the USA, in front of the NHL.

Stock car racing started as a rural southern sport, unofficially during the Prohibition Era of the 1920′s. More than two decades later, NASCAR organization was officially born and the sport quickly spread all over the United States. The turning point on NASCAR's popularity came in the 1980s when ESPN began televising races nationwide. Today, each Sunday in the US, around 100,000 NASCAR fans show up by the

racetrack to watch their favorite NASCAR drivers, while millions of fans across the nation take part in the ritual of watching the race on TV. The atmosphere on the NASCAR race track is unforgettable. The wild roar of the crowd mixes with the rumble of the motors. Cars bunched up together, without much room to move around, but despite such conditions able to approach 200 miles per hour.

Contacts and collisions among cars are very frequent. Instead of the "polite" outside or inside passing, NASCAR drivers often prefer the bump-and-pass move which basically involves nudging the car up in front to move it up the track. Serious accidents with cars going airborne are also something of a commonplace in NASCAR. Until recently when new safety measures have been integrated, fatal accidents happened once or twice a year with the Daytona International Speedway being the most notorious track.
