How to make £900 by putting £100 on the pasty-eating Sutton goalkeeper

Wayne Shaw, a reserve goalkeeper for the National League (fifth tier league) club Sutton United was released by his club after a controversy in 5th Round of the FA Cup match against Arsenal. During the game, when all the substitutions were used up, Shaw ate a meat pie. It would end up as a funny story were not for a bet for that to happen during that match from Sun Bets and the aftermath of whole situation.

  • Did Sutton United reserve goalkeeper fixed a football bet?

Like many of you, we love special bets. If there is an opportunity to place few pounds for a novelty bet with good Value, we do not think twice. Donald Trump Special Bets from Paddy Power, Brexit or The colour of Gary Lineker’s underwear are just a few examples of special bets that we have described on our website. But there are boundaries in special betting that should not be crossed and one of them is bet-fixing.

Known in the British media as the ‘Roly-Poly Goalie’, 45 year old Shaw was 280 pounds at the time. Ever since his team advanced to the 5th Round of the FA Cup after beating Leeds, the keeper became quite famous. But it was his weight, age and role at the club that was the subject of discussion both in Britain and in the world news not his goalkeeping skills.

  • The meat-pie eating incident

But wait, there is more to this story. The thing that Shaw would be remembered for till the end of his life will not be his great saves but a very unusual behaviour he displayed during the game. Around 81 minute, the reserve goalie got hungry and simply begun eating a meat pie.

Shaw explained that after Sutton United manager used up all his substitutions and his team was losing, he decided that he would eat a snack because he had not eaten anything that day. The whole situation would end up as a funny story for the newspapers were not for a certain bet offered by one of the bookmakers. Sun Bets, the bookmaker that is part of The Sun newspaper, offered a special bet with the odds of 8 to 1 for Wayne Shaw to eat a meat pie snack at any point during the match. What is even more controversial, the bookmaker sponsored the event and the kits of Sutton United, exclusively for that fixture.

  • Sad ending for Roly-Poly Goalie

After the match, Shaw explained that although he knew about the bet from his teammates, neither he or anyone connected with him and the club did put any money on the bet. What seemed like a funny story ended up very badly for him as the Football Association started an investigation for breaking the regulations and potential match-fixing. Shaw was immediately released by the club, supposedly by mutual agreement. Heartbroken keeper have to find new job, which should not be hard, given his recent fame.

Despite how funny this story may seem, it ended rather sadly for Wayne and somewhat decreased the positive mark that Sutton would left on English football this year. Apart from few people that made money on this bet, the biggest winner of this situation is...Joe Hart. After Shaw have retired from football, the Torino goalkeeper will not have to worry for his place in England’s goal for the Russian World Cup in 2018.

What a nonsense... Do something with your life man, do not waste it on eating meat-pie's or something. Get a jog for God's sake!

This was a fix-up, but not for a bet or something. The newspapers, the club, and Shaw did this to get attention and have something to write about. English football is boring and that is why they are doing things like that.
