The National Hockey League is one of the four most popular sport leagues in the US and definitely the “numero uno” sport league in Canada where hockey players are regarded as cultural icons. What distinguishes the National Hockey League from other super-rich leagues is their unique trophy. Stanley Cup, the ultimate goal of each of the 30 member clubs, is by far the oldest and the most famous trophy in the sporting world. Interesting trivia and rituals are connected with the already legendary Stanley Cup. The "traveling" trophy, as it is called, is kept for the duration of the whole year by the players and staff of the winning team. Each player on the team gets one day with the cup, and on average the cup spends in travel 250 days per year. Stanley Cup has the names of all of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved on its chalice which is the reason why it is almost 90 centimeters high! |
Following the expansion of the NHL from six to thirty clubs since the 1960s, NHL has become an increasingly multi-national league with almost 30 different player nationalities. Apart from the Canadian and US players , traditioanlly the core of the league, in the recent years we have witnessed an influx of hockey players from the Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia, Finland, Slovakia, Germany, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and several other countries. Ice hockey is not all about the big NHL. This indoor discipline is very popular throughout Europe, and particularly in its Eastern parts. While Europe sells out its talented rising players to the NHL, fading NHL stars decide to migrate to Europe, e.g. to Russian Continental Hockey League (KHL) which is growing rapidly in terms of size and stature. Europe's top professional hockey leagues include Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland and the already mentioned Russia. |

Moneyline – bet on which team will win the game. In low-scoring sports, such as hockey, moneyline is especially popular as it sometimes impossible to create a point spread. Example: Calgary Flames (+120) vs Vancuver Canucks (-140). Minus (-) in front of Vancuver indicates that they are the favorites to win the game – the player has to risk $140 to win $100. Plus (+) in front of Calgary indicates that they are the underdogs – the player has to risk $100 to win $120. As in this example, 20-cent line (the difference in the odds on the favorite and the odds on the underdog) is most frequently used on NHL. The line may be higher when the game features a larger favorite. Puck line (point spread bet) – with 1½ point spread the favorite is handicapped Example: Calgary Flames, +1.5 handicap, (-240) vs. Vancouver Canucks, -1.5 handicap, (+200). Calgary wagers are winning, if the Canadian team wins or losses by one goal. Vancuver Canucks wagers win if the team from the coastal city win by at least 2 goals. |
Totals (Over/Under bet) – betting on the total number of goals scored in the game. 5 and 6.5 are the most frequent numbers posted by the sportsbooks. Example: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens Over 5.5 (-110) Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens Under 5.5 (-110) Grand Salami (Over/ Under bet)– the combined total of all games that are played on a given day. Generally, when there are 10 games played the Grand Salami bet will be close to 53 to 60. Future (long-term) bets – usually predicting the outcomes that will be known at the end of the season. Example: "Will the team qualify to play-offs?" "Stanley Cup winner?" Exotic (Prop bets) – usually entertaining, funny bets on anything that is not related to the final score of an event. Example: "Team to take the most shots on goal." "Player to spent the most time in the penalty box." |
