James Naismith is considered the predecessor of basketball. The teacher of P.E. from the state of Massachusetts introduced rules of the game for the first time in December of 1891, in reply to the request of his schoolers about creation of a team game which can be played in a gym. History of the origin of one of the oldest team types of sports looks like this.

In 1936 basketball became the official Olympic discipline and ten years later beyond the seas the first in the world professional basketball league – the American NBA was created. Agreement of its creation was signed on the 6 of June 1946. If to speak about European basketball,

the most prestigious tournament was the Cup of European Champions (1957-91), the name of which in time was changed into Club Cup of Europe (1991-96) which in final account was renamed into Euroleague which it holds till today.

One hundred years later thanks to the American basketball star – Michael Jordan this discipline became one of the most popular and the most attended in the world. Who of us at those times didn't stay awake at night watching matches with His Airness, sir Charles Barkley, Hackim Olajuwon, Carl Melone? As for today after a period of stagnation an increase of the interest in this sporting discipline is observed.

The rules of basketball are not difficult. We decided to describe them a little. Two teams of 5 players each play in basketball. The aim of the team playing in attack is to score points, throwing the ball by hands into the opponent's basket. The opposing team in its turn has to prevent the attackers from scoring points. Basketball players throw the ball into the net-basket which is placed on a special table. The basket is placed at the height of 305 cm.

Lasting of the match depends on the type of the tournament.

in Europe 4 quarters are played, each lasting 10 minutes.
In NBA and WNBA 4X12, and NCAA 2X20 minutes.

Referees and a tournament observer observe the propriety and fouls of the game. Referees differentiate the following types of fouls:

ordinary (2 free throws)
technical (1 free throw + the ball from the out)
unsporting (2 free throws + the ball from the out).

Fouls in basketball:

3 seconds – an attacking player is in the penalty zone for more than 3 seconds without a passing throw;
5 seconds – a player after renewal, for instance after scoring points, owns the ball for 5 seconds not beginning a throw-in – the team loses the ball;
8 seconds – the team has to take the ball out of its half within 8 seconds, if it doesn't – it loses the ball
24 seconds – the team has to make a throw into the basket and the ball has to touch it within 24 seconds. If it isn't done the ball is lost.
Foul – a player who receives 5 fouls (Europe) and 6 fouls (USA) leaves the parquet. Fouls are divided into defensive (fouls of defenders) and attacking (fouls of the attacking players).
Incorrect throw-in – if a player doesn't fag out the ball and only carries it.
Out – if the ball leaves the playing field the opponent begins the game at the place where the ball left the game (side line).

As it was mentioned before the points are recognized for throwing the ball into the basket:

1 point for a throw from the charity stripe (4 m away from the basket)
2 points for a basket from the middle range (not less 6,75 m)

2+1 for a basket of a 2 point ball by frauding and using a free throw
3 points for a basket from behind of the 3-point line at a distance of 6,75, in NBA 7,24
3+1 for a basket of a free throw with fraud and using a free throw.

System of the game in USA and Europeto top

Basketball is divided into two main directions: American and European. The first type is first of all NBA, WNBA (women's league) and NCAA (university league). If to speak about the European trend then we mean the best European leagues: Spanish, Italian, Greek, Russian, French or Turkish. In NBA the teams are divided into two confederations (Western and Eastern) and they in their turn into Divisions (6 in total). In a regular championship teams from one division play 4 matches with each other (16 matches), 3 and 4 matches with teams from other divisions of the same confederation and the rest 30 matches with teams of another confederation. In total each team plays 82 matches. After a regular season there is a Play-off phase. Only 8 best teams from each confederation are advanced to it. The matches are played according to the system 1 with 8, 2 with 7, 3 with 6, 4 with 5 with preference of the gaming area for the teams which have better point balance.

Then second stage of the Play-off phase begins, where winners of the matches meet together until the Final of Confederation. Teams which are best in the West and East will play with each other in the “big final”. Unlike NBA, championships in Europe have less matches. At the Old Continent teams play in their national leagues (at weekends) and during the week (from Tuesday till Thursday in cups). The most popular basketball tournaments are women's and men's Euroleauges.
