Polish tennis players punished for fixed matches
Tennis Integrity Unit found two Polish players - Piotr Gadomski and Arkadiusz Kocyla - guilty of breaking the rules of the tennis anti-corruption program, thus imposed severe penalties on them. Players have been suspended with immediate effect.
Even in a sport such "pure" as tennis, disgraceful situations happen. Piotr Gadomski and Arkadiusz Kocyla were accused of fixed duel tennis matches in 2012 and 2013. Gadomski, who was once at 338. place in the world ranking, had four offenses, for which he was suspended for a period of seven years. On the other hand Kocyła, who has recently retired and currently is a coach, was found guilty of three offenses, for which he was suspended for five years. In addition, both players were fined in the amount of $ 15,000. Given that Gadomski in his career earned about $ 60,000, and Kocyła less than $ 25,000, financial penalties are very severe.
The investigation on fixed matches was led by the independent advocate for the anti-corruption - Richard H. McLaren, a hearing was held on August 13 in London. Only now the judgment has been made public.
Fixed matches unfortunately happen in sport despite better and better tools to combat these practices. Tennis is considered clean, gentlemanly sport but as it is seen, some people want to earn unfairly. As it is unwanted that such shameful incidents have negative effect at the overall image of the world tennis, special organizations in the fight against corruption, meticulously hunt any unfair event, and on those taking part in them, impose very severe penalties.
